Bitcoin ETFs Rebound as Ether Funds Bleed: Crypto Market Update, October 21, 2026
By Richter · Market Update · 2026-10-21
US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $526.6 million on Monday, October 19, their biggest day in a month. Almost all of it came from one fund: BlackRock's IBIT drew $665.2 million, which covered withdrawals from Fidelity and Grayscale products, CoinDesk reported.
That matters because ETF flows are one of the clearest windows we have into what larger, slower-moving investors are doing. On the same day, Ether funds lost $103.3 million. Bitcoin and ether are getting very different treatment from that crowd.
One Big Day for Bitcoin Funds
Some context before reading too much into Monday. Even with that inflow, cumulative bitcoin ETF flows from October 5 through October 19 were still negative at $380.6 million. One strong session helps. It doesn't undo two weeks of selling.
It also helps to know what an ETF "creation" is. When money flows into a fund, new shares get created, but that doesn't always mean someone bought fresh bitcoin on the open market that day. Inflows are a useful signal, and you should still read them as an imperfect one.
BlackRock is also building products for nervous investors. On October 19 it filed for a bitcoin ETF meant to offer upside exposure to IBIT with limited downside, though the filing gives no protection or cap figures. A rival protected fund from Calamos says it fell just 1% since October 2025, while bitcoin dropped as much as 52% from its peak over that stretch, per CoinDesk's coverage of the filing. Across the Atlantic, Switzerland's regulator FINMA approved the country's first retail fund holding bitcoin directly, The Defiant reported. No provider has been named yet.
Ether Funds Keep Losing Ground
US spot Ether ETFs posted $1.08 billion in net outflows for October through Tuesday, even after a $26 million inflow that day snapped a four-session losing streak, according to Cointelegraph. That wiped out September's $832 million of inflows. Year-to-date, net inflows now sit near $485 million.
ETH itself is down 9.7% for October, according to the same report, even though it gained 1.95% over the last three days. A short bounce inside a weak month is common. Steady outflows like these tend to weigh on price until they slow.
There is a longer-term thread worth noting. JPMorgan is reportedly bringing its institution-only JPMD deposit token to Ethereum to settle tokenized assets, as of October 19 reporting. JPMD barely moved on Base, so how much it matters depends on actual use.
A Calm, Green Three Days
Every major finished the window higher, with the bigger gains in the names further from bitcoin:
• BTC: $83,364.70, up 1.58%
• ETH: $2,456.34, up 1.95%
• SOL: $106.57, up 2.41%
• BNB and DOGE: both up 3.21%, at $746.30 and $0.08197
• XRP: $1.3574, up 3.9%, the best of the group
Our scanners flagged VVV most often, eight times, with new longs opening. SKY (7) and SUI (6) showed the same bullish pattern. On the other side, AAVE drew four flags with new shorts, and BTW showed shorts building. "New longs" here means fresh buy-side positions are opening in the futures market, which tells you where traders are leaning without saying they're right.
Solana's Alpenglow Faces a Readiness Test
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade, slated to activate October 21, aims to finalize transactions in about 150 milliseconds. To switch on, validators holding at least 82% of staked SOL have to sign off. An October 19 snapshot showed 45.2% of stake not ready, so timing and the risk of a restart hiccup are the things to watch for SOL.
Two other items deserve attention. Strategy spent $193.1 million buying back its STRC preferred shares during October 12 to 18 while buying just 267 BTC for $22.1 million. And an October 18 report described a Ledger Nano X bought from a German retailer with an implant that could read recovery words during setup. If you use a hardware wallet, buying directly from the manufacturer is the simple fix.
Separately, Binance says it will delist the PTBUSDT and MITOUSDT perpetual contracts on October 23, per its announcement. Anyone holding those positions should check the settlement terms.
Shorts Carried the Community Board
Quick definition first: an R-multiple measures a trade's result against the amount risked. A +2R trade made twice what it would have lost if the stop had been hit.
• The Momentum Algo closed a VVV long at +2.16R, lining up with the scanner's most-flagged name.
• The Nexus Algo closed an LSK short at +2.14R and a RAVE short at +2.03R.
• happyme4226 held a 10x MOVR short for over 14 days for +301.9%.
• jgrails caught an 8x ARIA short for +274.1% in 1 hour 18 minutes, and 1goldenboyy took an EPIC short for +111.3% at 10x.
Past results don't guarantee future returns; leveraged trading can lose more than your stake.
What to Watch This Week
Crude oil inventories land today at 10:30 a.m. ET, after an 8.557 million barrel draw last week. Another big draw could stoke inflation worries. Follow-up ETF flow data will show whether Monday's bitcoin inflow had company, and Alpenglow's rollout will set the tone for SOL.
On the regulatory side, the CFTC hosts its first AI-focused Frontier Forum on October 28, per CoinDesk, and Utah's lawsuit against Kalshi, which also names Susquehanna firms, adds legal pressure on prediction markets, The Block reported.
